BETTINA BUCK
FINDING FORM
Curated by Davide Ferri
In collaboration with Bureau Bettina Buck
Palazzo De’ Toschi, Bologna
February 1–19, 2023
On the occasion of ART CITY Bologna 2023, Banca di Bologna hosted Finding Form, an exhibition dedicated to the work of German artist Bettina Buck (Cologne, 1974 – Berlin, 2018), in the Conference Hall of Palazzo De’ Toschi. The exhibition was one of the Main Projects of ART CITY Bologna 2023, held in conjunction with Arte Fiera.
Curated by Davide Ferri, the exhibition traces the artist’s career, rooted in her twenty-year exploration of sculpture. For Bettina Buck, sculpture represents the pursuit of a temporary form and is part of an ongoing process—a concept directly reflected in the exhibition’s title.
The exhibition
On the occasion of ART CITY Bologna 2023, Banca di Bologna presents Finding Form, an exhibition dedicated to the work of German artist Bettina Buck (Cologne, 1974 – Berlin, 2018), in the Conference Hall of Palazzo De’ Toschi. The exhibition is one of the Main Projects of ART CITY Bologna 2023, held in conjunction with Arte Fiera.
Finding Form is dedicated to Bettina Buck’s work, aiming to shed light on the artist’s twenty-year career, focusing on the foundational aspects of her poetics, predominantly expressed through sculpture, installation, and performance. For Bettina Buck, sculpture represents the pursuit of a temporary form, part of an ongoing process—a concept directly reflected in the exhibition’s title.
Finding Form also serves as a close examination of Buck’s practice, characterized by the use of industrial materials commonly found in private spaces—foam rubber, tiles, latex foam, polystyrene, carpet, plastic—combined with a range of simple gestures that, with irony and precision, subvert their meaning.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is Interlude I, a video documenting a solitary walk through the English countryside, in which the artist is shown dragging a foam rubber form that can become many things: a potential sculpture, a mere obstacle or burden, a seat, or a vantage point from which to observe the landscape. In the second room of Palazzo De’ Toschi, Interlude II is installed, where the same foam rubber parallelepiped is transported into the halls of the National Gallery in Rome, engaging in dialogue with a cultural landscape and shifting its meaning as it interacts with the artworks, visitors, and the museum’s architecture.
In every work on display, the body plays a central role. It is the measure of the sculpture and also serves as its metaphor: sculpture, like the body, seeks its form over time. It changes. It occupies space. It is space.
